England Held By Switzerland In Euro 96 Group A Opener

England held by Switzerland in EURO 96 Group A opener

Shearer on target but England fail to impress

England were held to a disappointing 1-1 draw by Switzerland in their opening match of EURO 96 Group A at Wembley Stadium on Saturday. Alan Shearer scored his first goal for England in over two years to give the hosts the lead, but Kubilay Turkyilmaz equalised for Switzerland just before half-time.

England were the dominant side for much of the match, but they were unable to create many clear-cut chances. Switzerland, on the other hand, were dangerous on the counter-attack and could have won the match in the second half.

The draw leaves England in third place in Group A, behind Switzerland and the Netherlands. England will now need to beat the Netherlands in their next match on Wednesday to have any chance of reaching the quarter-finals.
